An Open Market for Informal Workers: The Precarious Labour Chowks of Delhi

This book is the result of two years of intensive field visits to Delhi’s labour chowks, focusing on detailed interviews and surveys conducted at two prominent labour chowks: Sarai Kale Khan and Company Baug. The research was generously supported by Azim Premji University through their research grant, and the final publication was brought out by Yoda Press, with additional support from Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung and the Centre for Equity Studies, where the research was housed. The collaborative efforts of these institutions provided a strong foundation for capturing the complex realities of informal labour in Delhi’s precarious workspaces.
Organized into several comprehensive sections, the book combines vivid case stories, quantitative survey analyses, and targeted recommendations aimed at addressing the challenges faced by informal workers at labour chowks. It delves into recruitment practices, labour processes, spatial inequalities, and the broader socio-economic context of migration and dispossession. Through rich narratives and empirical data, the book provides nuanced insights into the lived experiences of labourers, exposing structural exclusions while offering policy suggestions to enhance their rights and welfare.
